The title refers to the 'shtetls', those small towns in Eastern Europe, which had for centuries large Jewish populations, and which were utterly destroyed in the Holocaust . The imagery used for these six panels of a stairwell, show Jerusalem, traditionally the centre of Jewish religious consciousness. My depiction of the walled city was inspired by early Christian mosaics and contains references to medieval woodcuts.
The city is surrounded by the title in Yiddish writing, translated from the Hebrew characters. The water flowing from the sea is a metaphor for spiritual nourishment. The individual glass pieces are suggestive of a mosaic.
The etched pieces represent erosion and the passage of time. The mother of one of the couple in this household lost her entire family in the Holocaust, this window is a tribute to a now forgotten era.
