‘EARTH’ the John rayner memorial window

Liberal Jewish Synagogue, London 2023

“The earth is God’s, and all its fullness, the world, and all who dwell in it” (Psalm 24:1)

“Take care not to damage and destroy my world for if you destroy it, there is no one to repair it after you”
(Midrash Kohelet Rabbah 7:13)

This window was commissioned by Jenny Nathan, a long time member of LJS, in memory of her late husband Michael Nathan. She generously gave both her time and resources for charitable causes and embraced the theme of this window. The design is encapsulated by the second quotation above and reflects my ongoing concerns about the environment, using the tree as the key inspiration.

This panel is a result of combining traditional and modern techniques. It was created from several sheets of hand-blown antique ‘flashed’ glass which was extensively acid-etched to create different tonal effects. The glass was then sandblasted, silver stained and painted prior to being ‘wackered’ to a carrier sheet.

The panel was fabricated in Germany at the world famous Derix studio.
