‘Water’ the John rayner memorial window

Liberal Jewish Synagogue, London 2019

“Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream”

The panel was commissioned to honour the memory of Rabbi John Rayner. In his Principles of Jewish Ethics he identified the three pillars of a civilised society: justice being the first, followed by truth and peace:

Once I found this quotation from Amos, I knew immediately this would be the inspiration for the window’s imagery.

This panel is a result of combining traditional and modern techniques. It was created from a single sheet of hand-blown antique blue on clear ‘flashed’ glass which was extensively acid-etched to create the effects of flowing water. The glass was then sandblasted, enamelled and painted prior to being ‘wackered’ to a carrier sheet.

The panel was fabricated in Germany at the world famous Derix studio.
